WAKAROA - Deerfoot 72
FEATURED TOPICS

WAKAROA - Deerfoot 72

We first met Wakaroa's owners while anchored at Hanavave Baie, on Fatu Hiva in the Marquesas (a long time ago!). We were on our 50-foot (15.3m) Intermezzo, and they were cruising on a 70-foot (21.4m) S & S motorsailor, Winson. It was one of those situations so common in cruising. We shared a dinner, a couple of bottles of wine, and ended up sailing more or less around the world together.

Along the way we spent a large part of our spare time working on what the four of us jointly considered the ultimate cruising boat. When Wakaroa went into the water, she represented that ideal. Today, more than a few years later, Wakaroa is still in the family. Her owners have raised two sons aboard, and still do an annual cruise to the tropical South Pacific. Wakaroa has been consistently upgraded (the latest being a new suit of North sails and Antal sliders for her fully battened sails). The engine room was recently redone as well.

Kelly Archer and his crew at Salthouse Boatbuilders (in which Kelly was a partner) built Wakaroa for us. Many of these same skilled artisans are still at work with Kelly. They did Beowulf's interior, and are presently hard at work on our new FPB.

To replace Wakaroa today would not leave much daylight between you and three-and-a-half or four million dollars, depending on exchange rates. But even the money would not be enough. The timber that was used in her interior - a combination of rare golden kauri and Burmese teak - is no longer available. If you have a copy of our Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia, you will find lots more details on this design and her systems.

This is an unusual opportunity to acquire a one-owner yacht with impeccable credentials at a fraction of her replacement price. Just US$900,000. For more information e-mail us at Steve@SetSail.com.

Wakaroa's rig is of modest proportion, easily handled by one person. With a very svelte set of lines, and moderate displacement, that rig is enough to consistently average five days between the tropics and New Zealand. And, she is a very comfortable sea boat.

Her construction features fore-and-aft watertight bulkheads, with our usual aft engine room, together with a series of partial intermediate watertight sections. Scantlings are enormous, even by our standards, and reflect the fact that her owners were coming from a Corten steel hull that was 3/8" (9.6mm) thick.

On deck Wakaroa is clean and functional, with a nicely proportioned cockpit well protected with a dodger. Sailing controls are close by.

It is the interior, however, which sets Wakaroa apart. Even after all these years, it is still our favorite (along with Beowulf). The quality of the joinerwork, the timber, and the design combine to create something special. That's one of the reasons that her owners have been unable to bring themselves to part with her. Each time they started thinking about offering her for sale, they'd ask themselves, "With what would they replace her?". There was never an answer - and even if they wanted to go through the effort of building new, she could not be duplicated. Timber of this quality is simply no longer available - at any price.

 Wakaroa Plan View.
Here's an accommodation plan for Wakaroa. Note the huge living area amidships.

Following are a series of photos of Wakaroa's interior. Even if you're not in the market for a boat like this, they are worth perusing for the pleasure their beauty brings.

This is the entertainment center opposite the saloon seating area.

The saloon and galley form one large room, 20 feet (6.1m) long. This approach works well at sea and in port, creating a really pleasant sense of visual space (although it is tough to photograph).

The heart of any serious cruising vessel - the galley. Huge fridge and freezer volumes and lots of easily accessed storage.

This is the first time we designed the owner's suite forward. It worked so well that all subsequent boats have been done this way.

A chest of drawers at the foot of the bunk.

Opposite the bunk are a pair of hanging lockers and a seat optimized for a comfortable read.

The owners raised their two boys aboard. These little guys are now each 6'6" (2m). The netting, with double bars, acted to keep the babies in place at sea.

If you want to know what the work of the best carpenters in the world looks like, check out these photos.

Book cases are better designed facing fore-and-aft - this keeps the books in place offshore when heeled.

Our preference in nav stations is to design them so it is easy to change gear as time goes on. This is an old photo - much of this gear has been updated (see the equipment list at the end of this article).

We've used this same approach to nonskid on our teak soles since the mid-1970s.

It was tough to find timber that looks like this in the olden days. Now it is impossible.

Freezer detail. The insulated lid sits below a hinged section of counter. Both lid and hinged section have gaskets.
