Al and Beth answer a reader's questions:

Hello Danny,

The good people at SetSail.com have forwarded your inquiry about hauling out in Langkawi to me. We have been in this area on and off for the past 5 years.

I am planning on being in Langawai later this next year and would like to find out about doing a haul out with our 25 meter sailboat to have it cleaned and painted. We also will need to have the chalk on the deck removed and a soft one installed. Obviously, we would like to do this in the shortest amount of time as possible. Our schedule has us in Langawai around the middle of January or February.

I'm glad you mentioned your boat is 25 meters. That does put a limit on the resources in this area.
The time is OK. Most boats either get their work done before Christmas, or wait until around April after the good sailing season. You didn't say where you were now, or where you would be coming from?

What is the cost of a haul out for these needs?

I haven't a clue. There are 2 haul out yards here in Langkawi.

Rebak Marina could haul you I think, depending on your tonnage, but do not have much in the way of manpower to assist in getting the work done.

Wavemaster is a new yard geared for the larger yachts. They must have a work crew as you cannot do your own work. www.langkawiyachtcentre.com FAX: (60) 04-967-1231

What is the hourly rate for help to route out and re-install the chalk on the deck?
What about the cost for polishing the chrome on the boat?
Can we do this work within a few days by putting many people on the job? How many would be involved?

Who ever you contact should be able to answer these questions for you. Incidentally, do you mean "caulk" for the deck? A--caulking in between teak planks?

Are there other providers in the Langawai area I should contact?

I will also give you information in the Phuket area for your haul out.

Ratanachai Slipway Co. Ltd. This is a regular working shipyard that services a fishing fleet and also takes yachts. They have many staff, good workshops. And as the fishing boats here are wood, they would be proficient in re-caulking of a deck. FAX: (66) 076-212-443 E-mail: info@ratanachai-slipway.com

Boat Lagoon is another option. I do not have any contact information for them. Try something creative on the internet!

Good luck with all this. If you see a yellow hulled 42 footer named SUNFLOWER, that's us. Come say hello.

Regards,
Al and Beth Liggett
