24, 2005 - Good-bye for Now
by Al & Beth Liggett
Hi Everyone,
We had a great trip to Thailand a few days ago. Motored down the Langkawi harbor for an hour-and-a-half testing Mr. Volvo. He did not complain or whimper. So with fingers crossed we have decided to go on to Chagos.
Back to the trip north--sailing was just fine. Blue skies and all that. Winds got a bit boisterous and waves splashed us with salty water. Reefed to ease motion and the auto pilot. Caught a fish! A 2.5 foot king mackerel. Filleted the dude, but didn't feel much like eating it. Just south of Rok Nok we put in the second reef and rolled a few turns on the headsail to try to slow down a bit. More comfortable, but not much slower. Which put us into Phuket in less than 24 hours.
Since then we have been the hunter-gatherers, grinding down thru the list of provisions specific to Thailand--rice, flour, tomato juice, peanuts and popcorn. Taking 5 Kilos of the last--when it's gone, we leave Chagos! Have a pile of spares and other whatnots for our 4 months in never-never land. Still have some "can't finds" but--too bad, we're going anyway.
Have been having a social time with good friends ashore and afloat. We will miss them all when we return in July, so its likely to be a year or so before we get together again.
We will be out of touch until we get to Addu. (southern most island of the Maldives) There is a cyber shop there that hopefully still works and will send an update. In Chagos there is nothing, so no contacts once we arrive. We do have friends with ham radio set ups for Email that will be with us in Chagos, and I'm sure we can get a note off once in a while to let you know we are OK and still eating fish and rice.
Until July......A&B
