Family
Cruising: Best Age & Destinations
By Dave and
Jaja
A SetSailor asked: "My wife and I are hoping to take a 1-2 year hiatus from work and go cruising with our family, but two questions keep popping up: 1.) At what age would the experience be best for our kids (two boys currently 1 & 3 years old). 2.) If you only had a year, maybe two, where would you spend your time? Caribbean, Med, South Pacific?"
The
answer to your first question is, "soon". Dave and I found
that cruising became easier when our kids reached 18 months old.
At this point they were able to walk short distances ashore, and
they were completely potty trained (this was a Biggie). But, if
I had to pick an ideal age to start cruising it would be three years
old. At age three a child develops trunk rotation, which is the
key to swimming.
Both of our kids were able to swim quite well shortly before their
third birthdays. Growing up on beaches definitely speed up the swimming
skills, and it was a comfort when they could jump off the side of
the boat (or fall off) and climb back aboard. They loved swimming,
and it became a fun activity every day. Also, at age three, they
can tell you when they are going to throw up! - Now we're getting
into the exciting stuff - This may not sound like a big deal, but
when you have cleaned throw up off various things (including yourself)
it is a definite advantage.
If I had my choice of destination I would unhesitatingly head for the Pacific. It is truly paradise. However, if I had only one year I wouldn't go there because it's too much sailing time compared to "hanging out on the beach" time. Instead, I would head down to the Caribbean. There are some great spots. And, if you get ambitious you could head out to the ABC's which are beautiful. I am assuming that you are starting out on the East Coast??
I hope this has been helpful. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us.
