Dave Answers Questions about DRIVER'S Engine

One of our readers had some questions for the Martins, which we've posted here:
(To see a similar article by Steve Dashew click here.)

A question for you: The Martins are a huge inspiration to me and it also turns out that I have a nearly identical boat to theirs. Would it be possible for you to forward a question to them? I'd just like to know what size and type of engine they have on their boat for their high-latitude cruising/wintering over. I'm replacing mine and would just like their seasoned opinion! Thanks, Judson

DRIVER is powered by a Volvo 2003 series, non-turbo diesel. It is an adequate size. We use a 15-inch, three-bladed MaxProp set to a 10-inch pitch. This engine is reliable and (so far) it has given us no problems.

The Volvo came with the boat. Given a choice, however, I would probably not buy this engine. Spare parts cost a fortune overseas. (re: impellers, injectors, water pump seal kit, zincs...)

There is also a peculiar aspect to the injectors that has proven to be a real worry. They are seated in sleeves which can "slip" when the injectors are removed. (Either for servicing, or if you have to replace a nozzle in an emergency). If the sleeve moves, the seal is broken and you then have to pull the head to replace the seals. In remote places, the threat of this happening is scary. I have removed the injectors without mishap, but the threat for "big" problems is nerve-racking.

My engine also does not have glow plugs to preheat the cylinders. If you are going cold-weather sailing, having preheaters is a must.

I don't want to make the Volvo into a demon. It has been very good to us, but it does have its idiosyncracies.

Sorry, but I can not recommend another type of engine because I only have first-hand experience with the Volvo. Please contact SetSail if you have more questions. Regards, Dave Martin
