| Nathan and "Josephine" (the spinnaker) team up for another blissful day en route to Hiva Oa. |
Hello all. I am subbing for Ralph, N6ADJ, this week as he is on a one week vacation. I was successfull in chatting with Kristin tonite, Monday nite California time. They are doing fine, and passed the equator about 4 days ago. A very joyful experience. Kristin said that as they crossed the equator, they toasted all those people who had helped them get to this stage of their trip. I asked her if they "REALLY" popped a bottle of bubbly. Kristin assured me that they had. It was a bottle given to them by Sarah's grandfather and they felt that that fit this event perfectly. They have about 390 miles to go. (4 days more or less) They DO want to arrive in daylight and may adjust their arrival accordingly. I asked her what they would do upon arrival. She said that after all the formalities of clearing port customs, etc, that she was looking forward to a long, cool swim. They haven't had that luxury since Baja. Next on the list was a good meal, then several long hours of sleep. Everything is "cool" as Kristin said. POSITION CHECK: 0300z 19 May '98 5 degs, 49' S 133 degs, 37' W Course: 200 degs true 6.5 knots boat speed wind, 20 knots SE Lumpy swells to 5 feet from ESE 90 % cloud cover barometer: 1000 steady will be checking with the Hio Avai nightly until Ralph's return, 73, Jim Duffy W6EU Truckee
Hello All: After missing my schedule with them last nite due to some personal business, I talked to Kristin and Nathan tonight. They sound great. They are tired, and counting the miles to ATUONA on Hiva Oa, their next port of call. In Kristin's own words: "We are pressing on toward landfall. It seems as we get closer to land, it is harder and harder to get things done on board the boat. We have been going from a hard reach to a broad reach. We have been moving very fast, and it has not been very comfortable: we have been heeled over most of the time. So, we have just been taking turns on deck and grabbing naps and food as we can. Today Nathan managed to cook an OMELETTE! WOW. It was an amazing feat. We have been living on dried foods, granola bars, etc. We are becoming extremely focused on our next port, and we count the miles at every fix. We hope we aren't jinxing our estimated arrival time by "watching the pot" too closely. Our clothes stink, the boat stinks and we stink! We may make land as early as tomorrow, sundown (we hope). We have 83 miles to go." I told Kristin I would stand by tomorrow night (THURS) at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm pdst (on the hour), to wait for them to come up on the radio. This assumes that they don't show at the normal time of 8pm due to getting tied up in port, etc. I will send an email out after 10pm (or earlier). At 0315z (8:15pm pdst): 09 degs 17' S 137 degs 27' W 235 True heading speed: 5.5 knots wind: SE to 15 30 % cloud cover barom: 1002, up 2 since yesterday 83 miles to Atuona
Hello All: Good news. The Hio Avae made landfall at Hivo Oa (Atuona) today, 21 May at 2230 z (about 1530 pdst, Calif). I talked to Kristin tonight (Thurs) during our normal 8pm pdst schedule. She sounded great. Tired, still stinky, but happy to be safe and sound in port. I asked her how the "boat smell" was going. She said it was improving immensly! Nathan was on shore getting the bedding washed. She, however, was awaiting the end of our radio schedule so she could take her first shower. The next event tonight would be a visit to a lovely nearby resort for dinner. Nathan was lusting after a monster steak dinner. (Last night during our radio schedule, I made the mistake of mentioning that they must be very food focused. I make a wise crack about them getting a steak dinner as soon as they made port. Kristin said there were loud groans from Nathan upon the mention of the word 'steak' !) That's all for tonight. I will continue to watch the radio frequency at the normal hour to see what pops up during this stay in port..
